PRESENTATION OF PUBLIC SPEECH
His
honor Bapak Prabowo, the head of the national education of district office, Mr.
Munardi the school comittee, and ladies and gentlemen. It is a great pleasure
and privilege for me to welcome Mr. Anderson of the United States on behalf of
the World Bank that funds the building of the new computer laboratory and the
computer facilities in this school. I’d like to thank him for being with us to
open the new building and the computer facilities. Let me also extend a very
warm welcome to the parents and the teachers.
The
computer laboratory has great advantages for the students as well as for the
teachers. The information technology is now developing very fast and we cannot
get away from this. There are more than two hundred students and fifty teachers
who wish to learn to use and to obtain information from the computer. There are
only two excellent IT teachers in this school, and I think I need some other
professionals to help the students operate the computer either to do the word
processing and the data processing, or to obtain information from the internet.
Once again thank you very much for the World Bank that has funded the building.
Thank you.
GROUP
DISCUSSION
Sinta (The English Teacher)
I have identified that there are certain students in my
class who encounter serious problems. Some of the students are not motivated
to learn. They never do the homework, they often sleep during the class
hours, and they are ignorant. They bother the other students who really need
to learn. They come to school because of their parents, and they do not want
to be in class at all. I have already asked the students why they behave in
that way, but they do not give you the honest reasons. Maybe they will be
truthful with you Maria. Have you done something for these students, Dany?
Dany (The Math
Teacher)
Actually I have identified some students who have serious
problems. I have a discussion with them separately, and most of them tell me
that their parents are seldom at home. Their parents do not control them
intensively, and they give little attention to the children. Some of them
tell me that they do not have a happy family because their parents are
divorced. Most of them tell me that they have no problem with the financial
support from their parents. I have advised them to stop consuming the illegal
drugs and the like because they will loose the future, and it will only spoil
their life. But they still continue doing that. Maybe you have some ideas to
cope with these students, Rina.
Rina (the Biology
teacher)
There are so many students in our school who are indicated
to consume alcohols and drugs. Some of them consume the drugs because
someone else gives them. I have tried to speak face to face with the
students, but they really oblivious. What they need is attention from the
parents. They may be put in the rehabilitation center so that they may learn
many things and activities they offer. It is really difficult to handle them.
Their behavior shows that they are addicted to drugs. I think the
possible ways that school can carry on to overcome, if not alleviate the
problems faced by our students are speak to the parents.

me to lead the discussion. There are three speakers who would gratefully answer
the three questions in the importance of English nowadays. Before reading the

Sundayana of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Please join me in welcoming the

Well,
now I am going to read the questions. The first question is: “Why should we
learn English?” The second question is: “Is English important for the
Indonesians?” and the third question is: “Is it promising for someone being
able to speak English well?” Panelists the floor is yours.
Panelist 1:
Thank
you Mrs. Pantow. I would like to answer the first question: “Why should we
learn English?” As we know English is one of the world important languages.
Nowadays, English is used in any aspect of life such as in education, trading,
business, and international affairs. Without being able to speak English, we
will not function effectively in society. That is all I can say. My fellow
would like to elaborate further.
Panelist
2:
The
second question is: “What is the relationship between English and the era of
globalization?” As mentioned earlier, English is used in any aspect of life
such as in education, trading, business, and international affairs. English is
used everywhere, to be able to operate a computer, we have to understand
English, to operate a machine, washing machine for example, we have to
understand English. When we continue studying, the lectures assign us to read
English books. In other words, English is everywhere and very important.

Both of you are engaged in a serious debate on "English should be introduced to young students as early as possible.

- You tell student B that English
should be introduced to young students as early as possible
- You tell student B that young
students/young children usually learn the language quickly and easily.
- You tell student B that young
students/young children always abide by the teachers.
- You tell student B that the young
students will be enthusiastic in learning English if the teachers
implement interesting games.
- You argue that English is very
important.
- You have to use the appropriate
language functions to develop your argument.
Student B:
- You give your argumentation by
saying that it is difficult for the children/students to learn the foreign
language when they are not able to read and write well in the first
language.
- It is difficult for the teachers
to manage young children to learn a foreign language.
- It is not easy to find teachers
who understand the techniques of dealing with young children.
- Use appropriate language forms and
functions to develop your argument.
JAWAB
Student
A:
·
English
is now introduced to most elementary schools in Indonesia. I think English
should be introduced to young students as early as possible because children
usually learn the language quickly and easily. Children always abide by the
teachers, and they will be enthusiastic in learning English if the teachers
implement interesting teaching strategies. English is very important.
Therefore, it should be introduced to students in the early ages so that they
will be able to speak English well.
Student
B:
·
I
think it is difficult for the children to learn the foreign language when they
are not able yet to read and write well in the first language. I do not think
that the teachers are able to manage young children to learn a foreign
language. It is not easy to find teachers who understand the techniques of
dealing with young children, and those who have background to teach English for
young children.

Good
afternoon ladies and gentlemen. It is a great pleasure for me to guide the
seminar. The speaker in this seminar is professor Wardani. She will present “The
Techniques in Dealing with Large Classes. We have thirty minutes to listen
to her presentation and ten minutes for the discussion. The discussion will be
arranged in one to two terms. Professor Wardani, time is yours.
Student
C (presenter)
Ladies
and gentlemen, good afternoon. I am pleased to see you all here attending my
presentation. Welcome to my presentation. I would like to share experience with
you on the techniques in dealing with large classes.
There are three topics to be discussed:
- The term of large classes.
- The appropriate techniques in
teaching large classes.
- The students’ motivation.
Now, let me begin to explain the term
of large classes.
Student D (the
participant)
Excuse me. In Indonesian classes, there
are found that the students range from 40 to 60 in a class, and we almost
cannot find a class consisting of 20 or fewer than 30 students. Therefore, I do
not agree when you said that 30 is considered a large class, because in my
context 30 is a small class.
